Stepping into a sacred circle

A long time goal is being realized. So long have I loved Icons. Form, content, divinity, poetry merge into visual expression.  The visual becomes a gateway.  It is a window.

To begin, I am learning about egg tempera, an ancient medium.  Manipulation of form, the blending of raw materials.  Upon a wood plank, coated in hide glue and cotton gauze, the artist uses egg yolk, distilled white vinegar, water, & pigment.  In it’s purest sense, Tempera painting represents all of the earthly plane:  animal, mineral, vegetable, man. The basest elements.  The roots become tools of expression.  Mastery of medium is the primary goal initially.

It is said that God provides us with everything that we need, when we need it.  So as I type, on my engine of technological achievement, I contemplate pure earthly items, made only by the hand of God.   Raw material to be gathered, ground, stirred and combined.  It is a very pleasing endeavor.

As I learn this medium, and gaze into the eyes of an image made to represent the highest divinity it is my prayer to realize the transcendence from darkness to light, from material to immaterial, from external to internal, from ego to selflessness.   This blog will follow this journey and perhaps the bread crumbs will provide a path to follow.
